AL MAQTAA BRIDGE PROJECT HYDRODYNAMIC MODELLING

Our Work Scope

Temporary cofferdams at the bridge location will be constructed at each side of the channel for the bridge substructure works. The cofferdams will lead to an obstruction against the channel flow, and consequently, a substantial increase in the flow speeds is expected due to narrowed channel width.

The main objective of the present study is to determine the impacts of the cofferdams on the flow regime of the channel. Besides, investigation of the testing results of different opening widths is required to determine the final cofferdam geometry.

Hydrodynamic Model

All of the modeling works have been carried out in-house by ARTI Proje utilizing the state-of-the-art numerical modeling software MIKE21 of DHI.

The modeling methodology, which was applied in the three computational meshing systems, started from a large scale, and the whole gulf area has been modeled accordingly to capture the finer details of the vicinity of the project site.

Applying this cascaded approach provided both speed and control for the engineers in line with the goal of the accurate simulation.

Running parallel to Al Ain Road which serves as a key route between Abu Dhabi city and the Eastern and Western Emirates, the Al Maqtaa Channel and Al Maqtaa waterfront project is promoting one of the ‘Key Directions' of the Abu Dhabi Plan 2030.

The Al Maqtaa Channel is a man-made, single inlet tidal channel that extends for approximately 4 km long from its confluence with the Mussafah Channel in the north. The new bridge to be constructed is expected to improve the traffic circulation in the area.

Field Data

With hydrodynamic modeling study, it is aimed to determine the changes in the current field of the Al Maqtaa Channel.

ARTI Proje is providing a bathymetrical survey of the project area as well as water level, current, and water quality measurements to achieve this purpose. The areal model and local model of the project site are calibrated and verified using field measurements. Model tests are run considering different seasonal conditions of the tidal climate.
